13 Overlooked Films From Famous Directors

3. Stanley Kubrick - Barry Lyndon

Inherent Vice
Warner Bros.

The death of Stanley Kubrick in 1999 left a huge void in cinema that has never been filled. The Mozart of the film-making medium, Kubrick's unique level of detail, sophistication and meticulous perfection simply cannot be matched. He made 13 films across many different genres and while they are generally beloved, many always focus on 2001, The Shining, A Clockwork Orange and Full Metal Jacket while overlooking the rest.

Barry Lyndon is the biggest casualty of this and people usually see it as Kubrick's most underrated film, so at least people acknowledge it's overlooked but that doesn't make it any less frustrating.

Barry Lyndon is one of Kubrick's best films. Visually, every frame is a painting (no, every frame actually does look like a stunning painting) and technically it's more or less perfection, but it's also a reminder of how great a writer Kubrick was. This is an extremely moving story with huge amounts of soul that will be a tearjerker for many audiences.

Even for those who don't like period dramas, this is an absolute must-see. It's a terrific reminder of Kubrick's genius, even if lead actor Ryan O'Neal's Irish accent was shocking.
