13 Overlooked Films From Famous Directors

1. David Lynch - Lost Highway

Admittedly, there's some bias here since David Lynch is my all-time favorite director. But come on, Lost Highway is truly magnificent and painfully underrated.

In fairness, this is confusing even by Lynch's standards, but solving the mystery is part of the fun. It's actually a fascinating mix of Neo-Noir and Horror as well as a story about identity and human darkness. The story simply happens to be wrapped up in many convoluted layers and anyhow, the emotion and strange beauty that flows through the movie is undeniable, so it's actually a gripping and powerful story (sort-of). It's also one of Lynch's best-directed works and is just as good as his other surreal classics such as Mulholland Drive and Eraserhead.

During the opera music scene of The Shawshank Redemption, Morgan Freeman states: "I'd like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can't be expressed in words, and makes your heart ache because of it." That sums up Lost Highway. A proper explanation would undermine the beautiful vibe this film creates and words don't do it justice. It's better to let the sheer awesomeness of the picture overwhelm you and that is what more viewers need to do.
