13 Overlooked Films From Famous Directors

12. The Coen Brothers - Hail, Caesar!

Inherent Vice
Universal Pictures

The Coen Brothers are definitely cinema's most beloved directing team and even for a duo of their talents, the number of great films they've made is pretty astounding. There are quite a few, but Fargo, Miller's Crossing, No Country for Old Men and The Big Lewbowski leap immediately to mind. Given their relatively prolific work rate, the brothers can't turn out classics all the time so the muted reaction to their latest film, Hail Caesar!, makes little sense. There is no reason to drag it down simply because it's not one of their masterworks.

Hail, Caesar! generally continues their signature blend of stylish visuals and intelligent writing. It's funny, it's well-photographed, it's fun of fun homages to old Hollywood and it manages to be deep without being pretentious, proving the legendary fraternal duo have definitely still got it. They can't all be Big Lewbowskis and it wasn't particularly fair to dismiss it just because it was a more lightweight Coen Brothers offering.

It also has one of the best trailers of all time - a hilarious teaser featuring Ralph Fiennes trying to teach Alden Ehrenreich how to pronounce his lines.
