13 Small Changes That Would Make Terrible Movies Awesome
1. It's Actually A Satire - Friday The 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan
Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan is generally regarded as the worst of all the Friday the 13th movies, an unintentionally hilarious romp in which Jason Voorhees, who is scared of water, inexplicably swims to Manhattan and starts butchering New Yorkers out in the open.
Because the film takes itself almost completely seriously, it's an absolute failure of tone and intent, but there are a few self-aware moments to suggest that this could've been an uproarious meta-horror comedy that served as a satire of both the genre and New York City itself.
For example, nobody seems to bat much of an eyelid when Jason shows up in Times Square, and there's even an outrageous scene where he rides the subway, but these are outliers in a movie that's ultimately goofy for all the wrong reasons.
Had the film as a whole adopted the more satirical tone of the sixth movie, Jason Lives, it probably could've pulled off its insane premise a lot more convincingly (and entertainingly). Self-aware Jason slashing up rude New Yorkers? That could totally work.
