13 Things You Didn't Know About Friday 13th: The Final Chapter
1. Yes, Another Ridiculous Dream Sequence Was Filmed
If you're a Friday The 13th fan, you'll be aware of the peculiar predilection that the first few movies have for one last jump scare after the action has concluded, structured as a dream sequence. Yes, Ron Kurz, Part 2's screenwriter, insists that the final scare scene in his movie isn't a dream, no, his ending makes no sense as it stands and yes, the franchise seems to have since retconned it as a dream sequence regardless of his wishes.
The Final Chapter ends without the traditional fake-out dream sequence conclusion… but they did originally film one. It involved Trish and Tommy’s mom, whose death in the finished movie is implied but never actually shown on screen - however, the scene was scrapped and has only recently seen the light of day thanks to the efforts of documentary maker Daniel Farrands and director Joseph Zito.
The original ending has now been cobbled back together as much as can be expected, although there’s little to no soundtrack - so Zito and Kimberley Beck provide a commentary of sorts to flesh it out.
But still, it’s Yet Another Dream Sequence. It seems far more appropriate for them to have capped off the franchise (as they thought at the time) without yet another nonsensical fakeout... but it’s interesting to watch as a little bit of movie history...
