13 Things You Didn't Know About Friday 13th: The Final Chapter
10. Tommy Jarvis Was A Tribute To A Horror Legend
Corey Feldman's Tommy Jarvis is shown to have a love of special effects, prosthetics, masks and make-up: that, and his name of course, was written to be a tribute to the original Friday The 13th prosthetic make-up artist, horror movie legend Tom Savini.
Like his movie namesake, Savini himself had been a kid obsessed with horror movies, masks and make-up. Inspired by Man Of A Thousand Faces, the 1957 true story of early horror icon Lon Chaney, Savini became obsessed with creating new masks, make-up and effects, practicing on himself when he couldn't persuade his buddies to sit for him.
Savini himself was familiar with Joseph Zito, having worked with him on The Prowler. Offered the opportunity to return to the Friday The 13th franchise with the tease that he would get to kill Jason Voorhees for good, Savini accepted - he'd never been keen on the idea of making Jason the villain in the first place, memorably dismissing the idea as stupid.
And Jason’s death in this film is pretty definitive. Zito’s idea was that, while The Final Chapter would indeed mark the final chapter for Jason Voorhees, the door would be left open for future films to use Tommy himself as the villain - hence the freeze-frame on his disturbed and disturbing face at the end.
