13 Things You Didn't Know About Friday The 13th Part 2
12. It’s Set In The Future
Now, the Friday The 13th franchise is famously wonky when it comes to continuity. However, something that Friday The 13th Part 2 makes very clear is that the main action of this 1981 movie is set five years after the first… in other words, in the near future, not ‘the present day’ of 1981.
Fortunately, the stories told over the next few movies all took place within the same timeframe, allowing the shooting schedule to catch up with the franchise's narrative. However, it’s still up in the air what year this first sequel is actually set in.
You see, depending on your point of view on the skewed timeline of these movies, the original Friday The 13th was set on either Friday 13th July 1979 or Friday 13th June 1980 - or possibly in some alternate universe where 13th June 1979 was on a Friday. That gives us two possible settings for Friday The 13th Part 2: either 1984 or 1985.
Of course, that just adds more confusion. Is this sequel set on Friday The 13th at all? No one’s sure. There’s a Friday 13th July in 1984, while 1985 had to wait until September - but the third movie is set directly after this one, so does that take place on the weekend?
None of it really makes sense. Essentially, you have to pick the timeline you're comfortable with as a fan and ignore the evidence that doesn't fit that timeline.
