As is often the case, Friday the 13th Part III is a film that operated under a working title while in production; a fake title designed to not draw unwanted attention to the picture.

What was that working title? Why, that'd be Crystal Japan, named after a 1980 David Bowie single that narrowly missed out on being included on his Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) album. With that, Part III started somewhat of a tradition, with several Friday the 13th pictures taking Bowie tracks as the inspiration for their working title.

For example, Friday the 13th: The New Beginning went by Repetition, taken from a song on the Thin White Duke's 1979 Lodger, while Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives went under the Aladdin Sane name of Bowie's 1973 album and title track, and Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan goes back to Scary Monsters to borrow the Ashes to Ashes working title.
