13 Uncanny Similarities Between Venom And Catwoman
3. The Action Sequences
Venom's action sequences follow the structure of Catwoman to the T.
In Catwoman, the protagonist spends the entirety of the film only ever fighting large groups of faceless thugs up until the very end, in which she goes mano-a-mano with the primary antagonist. This results in a whole bunch of interesting action sequences, in which Catwoman easily disposes of some background extras and there's never a sense of conflict or tension.
Venom does this exact same thing. Every action sequence in Venom is just a variation on 'a group on armed men finds Eddie/Venom and tries to capture him' until the third act, where he fights Riot in a one-on-one fight. And even more so than Catwoman, all of these sequences are completely devoid of stakes because Venom is bulletproof and shown to be more-than-capable of taking out multiple goons without even having full control of Eddie.
But even worse than that is how similar the staging, blocking, and editing of Venom's fight sequences are to Catwoman's. The editing is so choppy and on top of the actual moments of impact that none of the hits ever land. The film is literally pulling its punches and it is frequently difficult to tell what is even actually going on, just like in all of Catwoman's action sequences.
