13 Uncanny Similarities Between Venom And Catwoman

2. Those Painful Third Acts

In Catwoman, after finally unraveling the entirety of Laurel's plot, Catwoman returns to Laurel's office at Hedare Beauty to confront her. Here, they fight and Catwoman winds up scratching Laurel's face, making her skin grow old and serving her with some sweet ironic justice as she dies.

In Venom, Eddie returns to the Life Foundation to face Carlton Drake. Here, they fight and Venom winds up blowing up the rocket that Drake has boarded, serving him with some equally sweet ironic justice. Those are the surface-level similarities, and they're pretty par the course.

But both of these finales also feature the kind of painful mid-fight line exchanges that should have been left to rot in the comic book films of the nineties, where they belong. They both also have the tried-and-true cliche of the 'oh no, the hero has lost!' moment, with Venom's somehow being even more on-the-nose than Catwoman's.

And then, of course, there's the editing and staging problem, which is arguably at its worst in the third act of each of these films. Both are poorly lit and framed in such a way that you cannot tell what's going on. In Venom, this problem is, again, even more pronounced because the film does practically nothing to distinguish which symbiote is which in the dim lighting.
