13 Uncanny Similarities Between Venom And Catwoman
1. The Money Shots
The reason that Catwoman remains a so-bad-its-good cult classic all these years later is that of the sincerity with which it delivers some absolutely god-awful ideas.
Take the scene in which Catwoman fights a host of thugs in a closed jewelry store. The film insists on constantly replacing Berry with an entirely CGI stunt double and is actually proud of it. They don't try to hide in the slightest, instead gloriously displaying it in full-blown close-ups, resulting in the ever-hysterical shot of the camera locked onto digital Halle Berry as she quickly cat-runs across the walls.
Catwoman thinks that its 'money shots' are the greatest thing since sliced bread, even when they're horrendous. And Venom very much shares this problem.
Take the shot that was used so much in the marketing of Eddie flying off of his motorcycle, only for some tendrils to stretch out and bring the motorcycle back to him so he can land safely.
This is a goofy visual in and of itself, with its less-than-stellar CGI, but the fact that the film feels the need to show it in glorious slow-motion makes it hysterical. Similarly, later sequences like the shot where the symbiotes turn into liquid around Eddie and Drake so that the audience sees the human hosts within the symbiotes is just as goofy.
Both films mistakenly place all of their chips on these big visual moments that never even come close to landing with anything more than a flop.
