13 Uncanny Similarities Between Venom And Catwoman

5. The Love Interests

Poor Benjamin Bratt and Michelle Williams.

Both Catwoman and Venom feature love interests for the protagonists played by stellar actors who get disappointingly shorted.

In Catwoman, Benjamin Bratt's Tom is a detective who spends most of the film on the other side of the law from the protagonist, simultaneously dating Patience and hunting down Catwoman. Eventually, he figures out her secret identity and although he's scared off by it at first, he comes around. He winds up helping out and accompanying Catwoman in the third act, getting a moment where he helps save her life, only to be sidelined for the remainder of the film.

In Venom, Michelle Williams' Anne is a lawyer who breaks up with Eddie and works for the Life Foundation, spending most of the film on the opposite side of the law from the protagonist. She eventually figures out what's happening to Eddie, that he is Venom, and although she's scared off by it at first, she comes around. She winds up helping out and accompanying Eddie in the third act, getting a moment where she helps save his life, only to be sidelined for the remainder of the film.

Sound familiar? To top it off, both of these characters are played by genuinely great actors who manage to rise above the muck of their respective films and actually give good performances. It's just a shame that neither film has a clue how to use them.
