13 Uncanny Similarities Between Venom And Catwoman
6. The Painful Attempts At 'Humor'
At the time of its theatrical release, Catwoman was absolutely savaged by critics for a great many things, but some of the biggest things they harped on were the jarring tonal shifts and poor attempts at humor.
And yeah, lines like, "White Russian, no ice, no vodka... hold the Kahlua" or "Cat got your tongue?" are groan-inducingly awful attempts at levity. They're goofy and funny in a more unintentional, Mystery Science Theater kind-of-way, but to go from a movie that overall takes itself painfully seriously into lines like this at the drop of a pen leaves the viewer with a bit of whiplash.
And similarly, Venom has this exact same problem. Dropping lines like "We will eat both of your arms, and then both of your legs, and then we will eat your face right off your head. You will be this armless, legless, faceless thing, won't you, rolling down the street like a turd in the wind!" are pretty obvious examples, but earlier instances of forced and stilted humor (like the double entendres in Eddie and Anne's conversation about the feeling of being Venom) are just as painful.
