The Role: James Lort, an abusive father based not-so-loosely on Shia LaBeouf's own alcoholic father, Jeffrey Craig LaBeouf.

Honey Boy is one of the most fascinatingly bizarre films due for release in 2019, a thinly-veiled biopic of LaBeouf's formative years where he suffered abuse at the hands of his dad.

LaBeouf, who wrote the film, has referred to it as a form of therapy, playing his own deadbeat father in order to work through his problems.

Early reviews out of Sundance have been universally positive, with numerous critics highlighting LaBeouf's performance and many deeming it the most impressive work of his career so far.

The film's card-carrying indie sensibilities might make it struggle to break out with the more mainstream-skewing Academy, but with Amazon Studios distributing, fingers crossed they'll give LaBeouf and the movie the push they seemingly deserve.

LaBeouf has proven himself a tenacious if eccentric performer in the past, and he's just been waiting for the right role to join the whole awards circus. This just might be it.
