The Actor: Jason Segel has made a career as a funnyman on TV shows such as Freaks and Geeks and How I Met Your Mother, not to mention acclaimed movies such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Jeff, Who Lives at Home and The Muppets. He hasn't done a whole lot of interest over the last few years, though that's all about to change... The Role: Segel plays late novelist David Foster Wallace, who in the movie is interviewed by journalist David Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg) over the course of a few days for Rolling Stone Magazine, revealing the persona of a genius artist. Why They Might Win: Segel's performance has been described as "career redefining" amid countless other superlatives in reviews, quite clearly landing as the actor's most impressive work to date, something the Academy will be eager to reward as they always are. It really just depends on whether the movie as a whole catches on with voters, or if it's seen as too niche to make it. Still, the Academy got Marion Cotillard nominated this year for a (brilliant) movie that practically nobody saw, so it's certainly possible.
