When a movie makes over a billion dollars, the studio is going to make every effort possible to squeeze a sequel out of it, and low and behold, Tim Burton's divisive adaptation of Lewis Carroll's timeless story will be getting a James Bobin-directed sequel in just over two years' time. Burton's movie boasts stunning visuals for sure, though his take lacks the heart of the original tale, and like so many of Burton's recent films, it's just style over substance, with Johnny Depp giving yet another curiously phoned-in performance, this time as the Mad Hatter (uncannily resembling an orange-haired Madonna as he did so). As for the sequel, where could it go? The story ends with Alice returning home, and that really should be the natural end of the story. Still, given how the first film melded elements from both Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, we should probably expect more of the same here. Will it be visually accomplished? Absolutely, but it's also hard to get excited about something which, not to sound naive about the nature of Hollywood, seems so clearly motivated by money above all else.
