13 Upcoming Movies That Are Already Doomed (And Why)

8. Valerian & The City Of A Thousand Planets

Valerian Dane DeHaan Cara Delevingne
EuropaCorp/Lionsgate

Release Date: July 21, 2017

Why It's Doomed: Luc Besson (Leon, The Fifth Element) helms the most expensive movie in French cinema history, costing a staggering $180 million while starring two actors who aren't exactly huge draws in Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne.

Valerian is on a ton of "most likely to bomb" lists, and it's hard not to look at the visually impressive, undeniably weird sci-fi fantasy without getting flashbacks of The Wachowskis' infamous Jupiter Ascending, which failed so horrendously two years ago.

It's just incredibly difficult to see this one having mainstream appeal from a financial perspective, while Besson's more recent films aren't exactly known for their smart, involving scripts.

Besson clearly believes in it, as financier Europacorp is the very company he himself founded, and while it could end up an admirable failure, it's just hard to see this one having any chance of succeeding.
