9. Owning All Of Their Characters

Marvel characters like X-Men and Spider-Man very much led to the creation of the modern superhero genre. Unfortunately, for this to have happened, Marvel had to sell away the rights to the characters. Long before they operated their own studio, Marvel rightly saw optioning their character as a lucrative way to get them on screen.

Ever since, Marvel has been slowly trying to re-acquire their characters, going through a lengthy process to get Spider-Man back and just now being the subject of rumours concerning Fantastic Four. On top of this, though their villain problem isn€™t directly affected by this issue, not owning the rights to their most famous villains, like Green Goblin, Galactus, Magneto, and Doctor Doom, certainly hasn€™t helped.

Whereas Marvel€™s ownership of their own characters has become so convoluted that people need diagrams to understand it, DC already has a leg up on the competition. DC owns the film rights to all of their characters and is thus unencumbered by distractions from other studios and bitter public feuds with Fox.
