4. Whitewashing Is A Plot Twist In Ghost In The Shell

There was a ton of controversy surrounding the release of Hollywood's live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell, specifically the "whitewashed" casting of Scarlett Johansson as The Major, as opposed to just casting an Asian actress.

Curiously, the movie itself actually rolls this controversy into the story and confronts it head-on, revealing that The Major, who is named Mira Killian in the movie, is actually a Japanese woman named Motoko Kusanagi, whose mind ends up placed into the body of a white woman.

As far as plot twists go, it's undeniably ballsy but also hilariously tone-deaf, by literally visualising the whitewashing as an aesthetic and thematic element of the story. The film's critics at least won a Pyrrhic victory of sorts, as Ghost in the Shell bombed at the box office and has basically been forgotten about already.
