The Plot: After Kris (Amy Seimetz) is kidnapped and poisoned with a bizarre, mind-altering parasite, she meets a man, Jeff (writer-director-producer-cinematographer-editor-composer Shane Carruth), who appears to have gone through the same experience. Together, they try to figure out exactly what has happened to them. Most WTF Moment: Once the roundworm is transplanted from Kris into a pig, she forms a mental link with the animal. The extent of this is clear when, once the pig becomes pregnant, Kris herself feels pregnant, even though she isn't. Why It's Awesome: Carruth proved with his low-budget debut Primer that he's not afraid to challenge audiences, and he turned things up to 11 in that regard with his follow-up. Grasping any sort of internal logic here without reading up on the film is exceedingly difficult, and even then, it doesn't seem like everything coheres except in an abstract way. That said, it's beautifully shot, well-acted, and utterly transfixing for its run-time.
