14 Awesome Movies To Watch This Summer (Which Aren't Blockbusters)

11. Sicario 2: Soldado

Sicario 2 Soldado Benicio Del Toro
Columbia Pictures

Release Date: June 29

The Plot: CIA agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) and undercover operative Alejandro Gillick (Benicio del Toro) team up stop a drug cartel smuggling terrorists across the U.S. border by orchestrating an all-out drug war between the cartels.

Why It's Going To Be Awesome: Though it's a thankless task following the lead of the previous film's director, Denis Villeneuve, Sicario 2 does look like it'll be a highly entertaining crime thriller in the very least, enlivened by a returning del Toro, Brolin and Jeffrey Donovan, while Catherine Keener joins the roster as a perfectly-cast CIA director.

The marketing so far suggests another stylishly intense, well-acted slice of gritty action-thriller fare, and while it probably won't match the original film, there's not really much shame in that.
