9. Biggs Returns To Tatooine

Which Episode? A New Hope

Where would it be in film? Intercut between the attack on the Tantive IV and the droid's escape.

What happens? The first time we met Luke Skywalker wasn't always going to be when the Jawas sell Artoo and Threepio to Owen Lars. In deleted scenes we see he caught a glimpse of the opening space battle while working on a moisture vaporator and sped to the Tosche Station where his friends completely disregard his claims. In amongst this gang is Biggs, Luke's childhood friend (and future casualty of the Battle of Yavin) on leave from the Academy, who subsequently reveals he's planning to joining the rebellion.

Should it have been cut? We're really in two minds here. On the one hand this is an important part of Luke's story - the fact he's friends with Biggs is hardly focused on in the finished film, making the latter's death much less resonant - but on the other it's giving us a character reveal long before we need it. Ultimately, we don't need these scenes to learn Luke's character, so this Tatooine bound sub-plot is really just pulling us out of the much more exciting Rebel-Empire clash.
