1996 was a watershed year for Presidential policy on invading aliens. And while Emmerich was bringing his own brand of architectural iconoclasm to the screen, Tim Burton’s take on the threat from the stars was to pack his movie chock-full of, well, stars.

Top of the list was ‘Joker’ Jack, somehow managing to bring an air of charismatic charm to the otherwise hapless President Dale.
