14 So-Called ‘Must-See’ Films In 2014 (That Might Actually Be Worth Watching)

13. Godzilla

Release Date: 16th May Why It€™s A Must See: Just... that trailer... good lord.... A few weeks ago Godzilla wouldn€™t have come close to this list. Even though I wasn€™t moved by Gareth Edwards€™ Monsters, which acted as a showreel for the British special effects expert€™s appointment as director of the reboot, the film felt unnecessary. Godzilla in America has never been that assured and the nuclear allegory feels a tad dated (bring me Cloverfield 2 and bring it me after six months of brilliant viral marketing). Then the trailer hit. Following a team of flare toting paratroopers, we descend through the clouds to a burning city. The music is tense and you can hear the professional€™s panicky breath. Through the smoke there€™s movement. Is it a falling building or... no, it€™s rising and... oh my... Why You Should Be Worried: Edwards isn€™t a large scale director. You have to question whether Warner Bros. execs even saw Monsters. The only film on Edwards€™ CV, in theory this would be the perfect precursor to the biggest screen monster of all. Except that Monsters is a totally human drama, concerned with the character interplay and (due to budgetary reasons) keeping the creatures in shadow. That€™s quite a jump to make. He did it with the scene from the trailer, but it's just a small part of a much bigger movie. Bottom Line: Size does matter.
