14 So-Called ‘Must-See’ Films In 2014 (That Might Actually Be Worth Watching)

8. A Million Ways To Die In The West

Release Date: 30th May (US), 6th June (UK) Why It€™s A Must See: Seth MacFarlane tackles the big screen again. Westerns are ever-so-slightly back in fashion after the big success of Django Unchained, but that€™ll be really put to the test with A Million Ways To Die In The West. A comedy that seems to be aiming to be the new Blazing Saddles, it€™s the story of a farmer whose attempts to win back his ex lead him into the path of a notorious criminal. Action comedies are a hard sell, but the real ace of A Million Ways is its writer-director-producer-actor Seth MacFarlane. The supremo behind Family Guy and proven box office draw following Ted, he€™s a unique force in comedy; mainstream but not in the SNL posse. Why You Should Be Worried: Seth MacFarlane tackles the big screen again. MacFarlane€™s comedy is best described as schizophrenic. The golden Family Guy episodes are rarely defined by their plots (Brian and Stewie team-ups are the exception), instead relying on with relentless cutaways. This works in twenty minute cartoons and wasn€™t as bad as everyone says at the Oscars, but in a feature length, live action film it€™s less assured. Ted was funny in parts, but the human side was too generic and the diversions (primarily Flash Gordon) felt out of place. This could go either way. Bottom Line: Um, er... ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Conway Twitty.
