There's absolutely no disputing the fact that Daniel Craig is an excellent James Bond (he might even be the best ever), but his return to the Bond franchise is a strange one.

Not only does it represent him going back on his word not to return, but - more damningly for the studio - it also means that his comments about preferring to slash his wrists than do so go entirely unpunished. Imagine a world where a studio allows an actor to say something that provocative and that offensive and still chase him to be in their movies.

Why would they think that was the best grounding to get a good performance out of him?!

The film's success will depend entirely on the director and how they close out Craig's Bond's story, but precedent suggests it will make money and will find lots of fans.
