14 Excruciatingly Gory Movie Fight Scenes To Make You Squirm

2. Deadwood

Grim Highlight: Protruding eyeball Deadwood was an HBO show created by David Milch that was great for each of its three seasons. It's a shame that the series is primarily remembered for being the western where the people cursed a lot, but the ultra-realistic fight scene in season three between Dan Dority and Captain Turner highlighted Deadwood's willingness to go beyond the trappings of traditional shows and reach for something bigger. But even if the scene was a sign of the show's exceptional qualities, it was still difficult to watch. Dan is one of Al Swearengen's lackies, a man who works at the Gem Saloon because he isn't necessarily smart enough to go off into business on his own. But even though he can't think like Al, he can definitely fight. Both Dan and the Captain are big fellas, and each blow that they land on one another leaves its trace on both the thrower and the receiver of the punch. Although their fight has to be approved by their respective bosses, when it comes to blows all rules are thrown aside. The Captain bites Dan's face, attempts to drown Dan in muddy water, and smashes the back of his head into a rock. But Dan gets back at the Captain by grabbing at his eye and pulling until it is torn out of its socket. It's excruciating watching the Captain trying to fit his eye back into place, so much so that it is a welcome reprieve when Dan mercifully beats him to death with a log.
