14 Excruciatingly Gory Movie Fight Scenes To Make You Squirm

3. Fight Club

Grim Highlight: Edward Norton pummelling Angel Face Of course Fight Club made it on to this list, it has "Fight" right there in the title. David Fincher's film about masculinity in crisis due to rampant consumerism packs a punch (sorry) because it gets at the ennui of middle-class life in America. The masochism that the male characters exhibit is already somewhat uncomfortable for the audience to watch, but add in some gory fight scenes and you get squirm-inducing cinema. The scene for this list is not either of the instances of the narrator fighting himself, it is the scene in which Edward Norton's character pummels Angel Face played by Jared Leto. The scene begins in a similar fashion as the rest of the fight scenes in the movie, in the mutual male bonding space in the basement of a bar. Edward Norton's narrator takes on Angel Face in what is supposed to be a friendly sparring match, but the scene quickly turns into the Narrator's attempt to permanently damage the pretty face of Jared Leto (much to the chagrin of teenage girls everywhere). The Narrator's admission that he "felt like destroying something beautiful" provides Norton's character with some added depth and foregrounds his downward spiral into further madness, but it comes at a cost not only for Angel Face's face but for the audience's desire to see the Fight Club as a fun bonding space.
