14 Excruciatingly Gory Movie Fight Scenes To Make You Squirm
9. Drive
Grim Highlight: The sound of a crushed skull Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive is not filled to the brim with violence, but every scene with gore is squirm-worthy. Whether it's Christina Hendricks' face getting blown off by a shotgun or poor Bryan Cranston being blood-letted by Albert Brooks, Drive pushes violence into the domain of brutality. The fight scene between the unnamed Driver played by Gosling and one of the goons Ron Perlman sends out to get him is short (the quickest fight scene on this list) but what it lacks in length it makes up for in sheer face-smashing. After the Driver kisses Irene (played by Carey Mulligan) in an elevator that they are sharing with the goon, Gosling proceeds to disarm the bad guy, get him to the floor, and cave in the goon's skull with his foot. It's a tough scene to watch not only because the sound design emphasises the goon's fractured face but because it is ultimately symbolic of why the Driver and Irene cannot be together. As she sees his unkempt and sweaty face after destroying the goon, she leaves him in the elevator, never to see him again.
