14 Excruciatingly Gory Movie Fight Scenes To Make You Squirm

8. Scanners

Grim Highlight: The engorged vein on Michael Ironside's forehead

Scanners is David Cronenberg's foray into the quasi-superhero world of mind control, and evidenced by the picture above it is certainly not lacking in gore. The fight scene that earns a spot on this list is not from the picture, but rather from the climactic duel of minds between Michael Ironside's evil Darryl Revok and the protagonist Cameron Vale. It is the only fight on this list that is fully telekinetic rather than directly physical, but that doesn't detract from the grotesque nature of the scene. As Vale and Revok stare at one another intensely, their skin begins to boil and veins protrude all around their body (but most notably on Michael Ironside's face). Their bodies begin to resemble typical depictions of how human bodies react to a nuclear bomb explosion... but there is no magical fridge to save the two scanners in this movie. Ultimately Vale's body is destroyed by Revok, but in the process Vale takes over Revok's body and vanquishes the bad guy's mind. It's a schlocky ending to a schlocky film, but Cronenberg still finds a way to send shivers down the audience's spine as they watch the two fight as their bodies fall apart.
