10. Moon (2009)
In space no one can hear you scream "I'm lonely!" Duncan Jones made quite a critically acclaimed impact with his 2009 feature debut, which paid homage to some of the great sci-fi films of the 60s and 70s. Moon channels the tone and atmosphere of films like 2001 and Silent Running (both of which also feature on this list) without purely being a retread of the themes and ideas of those films. Sam Rockwell is at his best playing Sam Bell, the sole custodian of a Helium-3 mining plant on the moon. His only company is the facility's HAL-like AI computer system GERTY voiced by Kevin Spacey, that is until he turns up himself. Though there have been films set in deeper space, the isolation felt in Moon is truly palpable, taking the idea of your only company being yourself to its literal and finite degree.
