After last year's rambunctious hosting job by Seth MacFarlane, the Academy decided to appoint a more democratic host for 2014, opting for the tried and tested success of Ellen DeGeneres, who received positive reviews for her MCing of the 2007 ceremony. DeGeneres may not have the ability to pull in younger audiences like MacFarlane may have, but she managed to brilliantly balance jokes that gently ribbed Hollywood's elite, while not getting too mean or self-consciously edgy with things. Her opening monologue was good fun, though probably the best skit of the night involved Ellen bringing a pizza boy on stage to help hand food out to the hungry stars. The point was perhaps laboured a little too long, but it was undeniably hilarious watching Harrison Ford perk up after being offered something to eat.
