Why It's Disappointing: Despite an intriguing first act, Self/less quickly loses itself down the rabbit hole of surprisingly generic plotting, squandering its promising concept and solid cast. What could've been an entertaining transhumanist thriller devolves into a grab-bag of scenes pulled from vastly superior sci-fi movies, such that it ends up having no real identity of its own, nor much interest to speak of. How To Improve It: Keep Ben Kingsley in it a little longer, cut the saggy middle act down by at least 20 minutes (there are at least three chase sequences that are repetitive and dull), and simply don't borrow so liberally from so many other films of the genre. Follow the lead of that potent opening half-hour by putting a premium on mystery and intrigue over silly set-pieces and revelations that are simply far too predictable.
