1989's Kickboxer was a highly successful martial arts vehicle for Jean-Claude Van Damme, yet despite grossing $50 million worldwide against a $2.7 million budget, the producers wouldn't stump up Van Damme's fee for the four sequels that were quickly churned out between 1991 and 1995.

Currying neither critical favour nor financial success, the series took a nap for over 20 years after this, before quasi-reboot Kickboxer: Vengeance was released in 2016, with its major selling point being the return of Van Damme in a supporting role.

With a surprisingly high $17 million budget and a talented cast - including Dave Bautista and Gina Carano - Vengeance was praised as the best of all the Kickboxer movies up to that point, and bizarrely enough, the best was yet to come.

The seventh movie, Kickboxer: Retaliation, roped Mike freaking Tyson and Christopher Lambert into the mix and currently holds a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score. It's quite a turnaround for a seemingly dead franchise, and what's more, the eighth movie, hilariously titled Kickboxer: Armageddon, is due to start shooting this year.
