14 Thought-Provoking Sci-Fi Films To Stream On Netflix Right Now

7. Synecdoche, New York

Sony Pictures Classics

The only film on the list, and potentially history, that blurs the line between sci-fi, fantasy, and mental illness as the main genre. Charlie Kaufman’s first of two films on the list, Synecdoche, New York is by far his hardest to grasp, and that’s saying something.

The late Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s Caden wins a grant to make his magnum opus stage play and decides to recreate a life-sized New York for his theatrical autobiography, all within a colossal warehouse.

It’s not certain how reliable a narrator Caden (or Kaufman) is, but his directorial debut is nothing less than epic and ambition seeping from its ears. At times dark and at other times darker, the dramedy walks the tightrope between sanity and science fiction, somewhat beautifully.

If you talk in a theatre I'm in, be prepared to get some pretty passive aggressive stares.
