The Hype: A live-action-animation hybrid movie based on the iconic video game character is in the works at Sega, penciled in for an apparent 2018 release.

Why It Won't Happen: This just sounds like one of those ideas that a studio executive with no idea how video games and movies fit together came up with, and in a few years time, they'll probably realise it's a no-go when someone finally tells them.

A big-budget 3D animated Sonic movie? Sure, but the hybrid genre has a pretty horrid track record, and it's hard to imagine Sonic running around the real world playing well with either fans or more casual audiences.

Why It Still Could: Sega don't really have a whole lot to lose at this point, and their making an attempt to diversify their portfolio with filmmaking feels like a last-ditch effort to remain relevant.
