15 Acclaimed Recent Movies That Are (Probably) Doomed To Receive A Backlash
5. 1917
1917 is the best film discussed on this list and it is an undeniable technical masterwork, but it is also a gimmick-based movie. In this case, the gimmick is that it looks like one continuous take (or two, to be specific, since it contains a time-jump).
On the big-screen, it's breath-taking, but on the small screen it's not nearly as effective, especially since the script is very straightforward and often derivative of other war films.
To be honest, it was a huge relief that it didn't win Best Picture, since Little Women, Marriage Story, The Irishman and, of course, the surprise winner Parasite were all far, far better and given that this is a masterpiece of directing but not of writing, it wasn't the deserving winner.
Had it won, it no doubt would've faced a backlash shortly after winning, but a backlash is probably on the way anyhow. Once people re-watch it without the big-screen, it'll probably plummet right off the IMDb Top 250.
