15 Acclaimed Recent Movies That Are (Probably) Doomed To Receive A Backlash
14. The Lego Movie: The Second Part
It's very, very surprising that this movie received mostly positive reviews upon release, since it was a disappointing sequel (to one of the greatest children's films of the decade, no less) with a by-the-numbers script, very few memorable moments and a poorly-delivered message on toxic masculinity.
Sometimes, disappointing sequels get surprisingly good reviews, before falling out of favour later on. It seems that, sometimes, reviewers don't want to admit just how disappointing a film was at first - just ask Iron Man 2.
No-one should be judged for that. We've all denied how disappointing an anticipated film actually was before (I've done that plenty of times) and this seems likely to be what happened to The Lego Movie 2.
Regardless, this is very unlikely to be well-regarded in future. If viewers don't recognise a disappointing film the first time, a second viewing will usually reveal the flick's true colours. A great example of this is Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. That was well-received at the time, but once people revisited it and thought about it without the hype it was (rightly) seen as a let-down.
