A type of film which frequently faces backlash is the Oscar-Bait movie. The reason for this is that, while most of the films nominated for Oscars these days are good films, they aren't necessarily the genuine best of a year and this makes people more likely to subsequently go off them.

This biopic of Alan Turing is an example of this. It's a good film and most certainly worth a watch, but it shouldn't really have been such a big Oscar contender, since the only awards-worthy thing in it is Benedict Cumberbatch's performance.

Due to how shocking the true story is, it will likely hit very hard the first time, but when you know what's coming you'll notice more of the film's flaws and how flat a lot of it is. For example, the entire subplot with Keira Knightley's character doesn't work at all and some of the writing and characterisation is hit or miss.

It'll be harder still to enjoy a rewatch once you learn about the many, many historical inaccuracies that fill this movie, as well the film's inaccurate representation of Turing's personality and its downplaying of his homosexuality.
