15 Action Films From The 1980s You Must Watch

2. Die Hard - 1988

Rambo First Blood
20th Century Fox

After both Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone turned down the role of John McClane in Die Hard, many were sceptical of the decision to cast Bruce Willis as the leading man and Alan Rickman as the main villain. But all the doubters would be proven wrong, as the success of Die Hard acted as a catalyst for both men’s careers.

On Christmas Eve, NYPD Detective John McClane hopes to reconcile with his estranged wife at her company's Christmas party. But a German Terrorist group, led by the charismatic Hans Gruber, takes everyone hostage. Outmanned and outgunned, McClane carefully ascends the building and takes out Gruber’s goons one by one as he tries to foil their plans, as well as rescue his wife and the hostages.

It could also be argued that of all the films on this list, Die Hard has the most entertaining main characters, courtesy of the amazing performances from Willis and Rickman.
