15 Actors Who Were Almost Cast In Harry Potter

14. Hugh Grant - Gilderoy Lockhart

Nobody could have done Gilderoy Lockhart any better than Kenneth Branagh. No doubt channelling other actors he's come into contact with in his time, the actor-director delivered an entertaining performance as the egotistical author-cum-teacher, despite toning down some of his more unlikable characteristics from the book. It was a shame a scene seeing him still unrecovered from his memory loss in Order Of The Phoenix was cut; he's one of our favourite characters from the whole series. Branagh, however, was not the first choice for the part, with Lockhart originally being offered to, and accepted by, Hugh Grant. Grant only left the project when scheduling conflicts got in the way. Quite what his Lockhart would have been like remains to be seen, although if his Daniel Cleaver from Bridget Jones' Diary is anything to go by he'd have been a little more out-and-out detestable.
