15 Actors Almost Cast In 2015's Biggest Movies

7. Lupita Nyong'o - Tiger Lily (Pan)

The Role: In the original story, Tiger Lily is the daughter of the Chief of the Piccaninny tribe, a princess who is captured by the pirates but eventually saved by Peter Pan. What Happened: Lupita Nyong'o was in consideration for the part alongside French actress Adèle Exarchopoulos, but the part eventually went to Rooney Mara, likely because she's easily the best-known of the three actresses. Who Should've Got The Part: Again, another tough one. Casting Mara proved majorly controversial because she is white and the character is typically played by someone with darker skin, though it's also been suggested that Warner deliberately white-washed the role to avoid accusations of racism that plague other Peter Pan productions, given the connotations of the word "piccaninny". Rather ironically, they denied an ethnic actor a part in order to avoid a racist depiction, though if Nyong'o had been cast, there's a distinct feeling she would have kept the purists happy with a performance likely more in step with what has come before.
