13. Unbreakable (2000)
Unbreakable tells the story of David (Bruce Willis), a seemingly ordinary guy who is lucky enough to survive a devastating train crash. As it turns out, David is the sole survivor of the disaster, escaping without so much as a scratch. As he and his family begin to come to terms with what this means, David is contacted by a mysterious comic book dealer (Samuel L Jackson) who opens his eyes to unlocking his true potential.
Here we find M. Night Shyamalan doing what he does best; telling an interesting story while unravelling a curious mystery along the way. It's a unique take on the superhero origin story and a captivating watch with a chilling finale. Whilst there's that typical Shyamalan twist at the end, it's not quite as ham-fisted or predictable as in some of his later works.
Unbreakable works perfectly on its own, but with the recent releases of Split and Glass (set in the same Universe), there's never been a better time to revisit this often overlooked gem.
