9. They Call Me Jeeg (2015)

Loosely based on the anime Steel Jeeg, They Call Me Jeeg is an Italian superhero tale set in Rome. It follows Enzo, a criminal who comes into contact with radioactive waste and, rather than dying a hideous death, instead gains superhuman abilities.

Rather than use his abilities for good though Enzo continues a life of crime eventually getting in the way of a dangerous gang by ripping off their target first. Ultimately, as the gang's leader discovers Enzo's true identity and begins to threaten the ones he loves, our hero vow's to protect the city he lives in.

They Call Me Jeeg plays with the typical superhero origin story by making our hero a selfish criminal, a loner who is only looking out for himself. It's dark and gritty but without losing its sense of humour and never gets too over the top (for a film about a superhero).

The film is entirely in Italian with English Subtitles but this should not be considered a barrier to entry, a bit of reading never hurt anyone.
