15 Alternative Superhero And Comic Book Movies You Must See
8. Darkman (1990)
By the end of the '80s, Sam Raimi was a hot prospect, having proven himself as a unique and inventive writer/director with his popular Evil Dead franchise. Despite his early successes and obvious creative flair, the major studios were still reluctant to trust their big superhero franchises to a relative unknown and potential loose cannon.
So, rather than bide his time until the studios gave him his shot, Raimi decided instead to write his own superhero movie, Darkman, a twisted tale of a bandaged vigilante with the unusual ability to look like any man he wishes.
As you might expect from the director of Evil Dead, the film contains scenes of horrific violence alongside some explosive action set pieces and Raimi's typical zany humour. The effects are somewhat dated for today's audiences used to entire cities exploding in beautiful displays of CG fireworks, but give it a shot and there's an enjoyably dark and madcap experience to be had. Essential viewing for fans of Liam Neeson.
