15 Awesome 2014 Performances That Deserve Oscars (But Won't Get Nominated)
9. Tilda Swinton - Snowpiercer
Bong Joon-ho's dark, dystopic sci-fi has won widespread acclaim with its grim vision of the future, and a big reason for the movie's success is Tilda Swinton's viciously demented performance as Mason, the evil Minister opposing Curtis (Chris Evans) and the other revolutionaries. For starters, Tilda is almost completely unrecognisable in her less-than-fetching make-up and attire, only further enhancing how grotesque her character is. With a thick Yorkshire accent to boot, this is an enormously transformative role for the actress, one which she pulls off by sprinkling a decent portion of ham into the mix, but not enough that the performance turns the movie into a cartoon. Given how weak the Best Supporting Actress field is this year, it's pretty unfortunate that the Tilda conversation hasn't been louder. Sure, she won a Gotham Independent Film Awards special Tribute Award for her performances this year, but when so many precursor awards gave her nominations for the movie while there are only a couple of lock performances in this group, how has she not made it into the mix? Madness!
