Despite how successful the Friday the 13th films have been, they've never been popular with critics and this isn't entirely surprising. Most of them are OK B-Movies but they are still very trashy and are pretty much all exactly the same, so the low scores are understandable. Nevertheless, there are a couple of them which deserved better; one of them is the 2009 remake.
Friday the 13th (2009) is one of the most under-appreciated remakes out there and the negative reviews seemed to focus entirely on it being the same as its predecessors. It is similar to the franchise's other films but that doesn't make it bad.
It's far from perfect and sags in the middle, but this is still a suspenseful, brutally violent and overall good thriller that is never, ever dull. Better still, it's combined with a darkly comical, gleefully excessive tone which makes this a very entertaining and delightfully unhinged reminder of the trashy sense of fun that made the slasher film popular to begin with.
This really needs to be cut some slack by not only critics, but fans as well judging by its 5.6 rating on IMDb.
