15 Awesome Plot Twists That Totally Saved Awful Movies

9. Edward Was A Human Puppet The Whole Time - Dead Silence

Dead Silence
Universal Pictures

The Twist: Protagonist Jamie (Ryan Kwanten) finds out that his stroke-addled father Edward (Bob Gunton) has actually been dead for the entire movie, with his hollowed-out body being used as a life-sized ventriloquist dummy by his trophy wife Ella (Amber Valletta), who is possessed by murderous malevolent entity Mary Shaw.

Why It Saves The Movie: It's a twist ending so outrageously stupid and ridiculous that it pretty much makes up for the the 80 minutes of idiocy that came before it. Director James Wan reveals in a final montage that Edward's back is a carved-out hole containing the various rods and mechanisms for Ella to move his mouth, all while she apparently throws her voice to sound like a 70-year-old man.

It also shows that every time she feeds him a meal, it simply travels down a plastic tube and plops out the other side. Given that there's no way anyone could keep this jig up for long, it's almost admirable that the movie so readily hurled itself headlong into a nonsensical oblivion, saving an otherwise dull and not very scary horror flick in the process.
