8. Cliff & Cydney Are Really The Killers - A Perfect Getaway

A Perfect Getaway
Rogue Pictures

The Twist: Newlywed protagonists Cliff and Cydney Anderson (Steve Zahn & Milla Jovovich) are holidaying in Hawaii when they learn of some murders that took place in the local area. They soon enough become suspicious of a couple, Cleo (Marley Shelton) and Kale (Chris Hemsworth), who they meet on their trail, and later, the pair are arrested for the murders.

However, the other couple they're with, Nick and Gina (Timothy Olyphant & Kiele Sanchez), eventually discover that Cliff and Cydney have been the killers all along, psychotic drug addicts who kill holidaying couples and assume their identities. At the end of the movie, Cydney plays the damsel-in-distress card and convinces a police sniper to shoot Cliff, freeing her of an abusive relationship.

Why It Saves The Movie: A relatively dull and generic thriller movie is given a pleasant subversion at the one-hour mark, delivering a wildly unexpected twist that toyed heavily with audience expectations and was all the better for it. Furthermore, it gives the title a clever second meaning.
