4. Berlin Syndrome
The Plot: A young Australian tourist living in Berlin, Clare (Teresa Palmer), begins a passionate fling with a German man named Andi (Max Riemelt), but soon realises that he has no intention of ever letting her leave his remote apartment.
Why It's Awesome: Director Cate Shortland (Somersault, Lore) mines maximum suspense out of this slow-building psychological thriller, taking a familiar premise and elevating it thanks to her taut direction and Teresa Palmer's outstanding performance.
Examining the nature of prisoner dynamics in disturbing, haunting depth, Shortland avoids genre cliches and instead carves out a deeply unsettling yet never exploitative outing.
If you thought Palmer was just another pretty face, this role proves beyond any doubt that she's got some serious acting chops.
